Aaron Nixon scored 32 points to help the Long Beach State men’s basketball team hold on for an 82-76 Big West Conference victory over the University of Pacific Tigers on Monday night in the Spanos Center on the UOP campus. The win gave the 49ers 20-7 overall and 10-2 conference records and clinched their first outright Big West regular-season title since 1996 in the process. The Tigers (5-7 and 11-16), who lost to Long Beach at home for the first time since 2002, cut their deficit to 72-70 on a pull-up jumper by Reggie Vezia with 2:14 to go. But Nixon, fouled on a drive, sank two free throws to pad the lead to four points with 1:57 left. And after Anthony Esparza missed two free throws for UOP, Byrd (15 points and 10 rebounds) answered with a 3-pointer from the left corner, with 1:18 to go, after a penetration and pass by Kevin Houston. Frank Burlison reported from Long Beach. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set!
