The video for Musgraves’ uplifting piano ballad arrived late Sunday evening, right around the time when she was in Los Angeles collecting her (multiple) golden gramophones at the 2019 Grammy Award ceremonies. The new video takes viewers into a few different settings, where various individuals are seen attempting to cope with each of their own struggles ranging from alcoholism and young motherhood to a young man discovering his identity in a household run by dysfunctional parents. Musgraves also appears in the video, portraying the attractive narrator while the fictional characters live out their darker realities in the dimly-lit homes where the video takes place. Every now and then some glimmers of sunshine glisten through the shadows and shine onto Musgraves as she sings out, “If you could see what I see, you’d be blinded by the colors/Yellow, red and orange and green, and at least a million others.” By the time the video’s storyline begins to reach the end, each of the characters can be seen embracing Musgraves’ symbolic optimism with a plethora of rainbow colors of their own.
