Two quick-thinking Donegal students have been honoured for saving the life of their classmate at school.Ruby Hurst (20) and Odhrán O’Neill (19) acted quickly in a life or death situation last year when a fellow student collapsed suddenly after P.E. class. Thanks to their immediate CPR efforts on that fateful October day, the young person was given a chance to live. Ruby and Odhrán sprang into action when the emergency occurred and, as Odhrán sped to locate the school’s defibrillator, Ruby began ‘working’ on the student.Together they worked as a team to perform CPR while they awaited the arrival of the emergency ambulance. The end result was that they succeeded in keeping the student alive; their early intervention gave the student a chance. Both Odhrán and Ruby were both duly qualified in CPR after volunteering in a course run by Irish Water Safety in Ballyshannon. And when the hour of need came, they had the skills to act quickly and safely.Odhrán and Ruby were both honoured with the Community Safety Award at the inaugural Garda National Youth Awards on Saturday.Chief Collette Quinn with Award Winners Ruby Hurst and Odhran O Neill at the naugural Garda National Youth AwardsThe event saw 22 awards presented to over 100 young people aged 13 – 21 in recognition of their contribution to making their communities better places to live.Odhrán and Ruby were nominated by Principal Jimmy Keogh of Coláiste Cholmcille and highly praised for their decision to sign on for the life-saving CPR course.Young heroes used CPR to save classmate’s life was last modified: May 1st, 2019 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:colaiste cholmcilleCommunity Safety Awardinaugural Garda National Youth AwardsOdhrán O’NeillRuby Hurst
The 2020 Letterkenny Pantomime Society’s annual production is moving from An Grianan Theatre to the Aura Leisure Centre next January. While no official comment has been forthcoming from the pantomime society, it is believed the change of venue has been under consideration for the past two years. The Tirconaill Tribune today reports the move is due to cost overheads and the economics of scale for the production of ten community shows aimed at delivering maximum return in line with the workload and efforts of the many groups who make the production viable every year. For many, this is their only fundraising avenue and the panto committee is acutely aware that without the efforts of the voluntary groups, their shows would be in serious financial difficulties. It is estimated that to date the Letterkenny Pantomime society has donated in the region of €400,000 to a range of voluntary groups.Regarded as one of the most popular family shows in Donegal, the pantomime history is steeped in legend; not only in entertainment value but in the huge input it has established as a major fundraiser for so many voluntary groups. For many who visit the panto, they are amazed at the level of the professionalism brought to bear on the presentation and are astounded that this is a fully amateur show and nobody on stage is paid. The 2020 show is ‘Cinderella’ which is one of the most popular productions in the world of pantomime. The show will run for five nights in the Aura in the third week of January and plans are at an advanced stage to create a one thousand seater theatre with professional stage facilities to match.Rehearsals are due to get underway in the coming weeks and the search to find ‘Cinderella’ and the leading man is already underway. The Letterkenny pantomime is steeped in the legend of the town dating back to the days of the Devlin Hall and some of the great characters from that era are now long dead.Patrick Doherty has been the show’s director since it was revived over thirty years ago. In recent years it has embraced the concept of charitable groups including the Donegal Hospice, sports: SVP: Pieta House, Mary’s Meals, the Little Angels school, sport clubs the national school committees sponsoring the main nights of the show. This has proven to be a huge success… but at the same time it involves them selling the seats and ensuring the show is a sell-out.From humble beginnings in the Devlin Hall, the production has had a number of homes in the intervening years: the Literary Institute: St. Eunan’s College: the Community Centre: The Mount Errigal Hotel: An Grianan Theatre… and now the Aura Leisure Centre. After a lull in productions following ten years in the Community Centre, the show moved to An Grianan in 2000 and has played there for nineteen seasons. Noel O’Connell of the Hospice committee backed the initial production in An Grianan since there was no funding to bankroll the show. The production team guaranteed they would deliver £5,000 to the Hospice Funds and Mr. O’Connell put his own money on the line to ensure the show would go ahead. In the event, a sum of more than £16,000 was donated to the Hospice and so began a very successful era of truly great shows.Auditions for Cinderella are scheduled for the coming weeks and all roles are up for grabs.Letterkenny panto to move from An Grianan Theatre after almost 20 years was last modified: August 22nd, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)
Good thing for a lot of people that Don Nelson doesn’t take “I beg you not to do this thing” for an answer.Nelson has long maintained that it was his wish to pick Stephen Curry in the 2009 NBA draft. He didn’t think it would be possible. When Curry fell to the Warriors at No. 7, Nelson was euphoric — and still is.Turns out there was another dynamic in play that night.According to an NBC Sports Bay Area report, before Nelson drafted Stephen Curry, he had a conversation with Dell Curry, …

Peju Alatise is the 2017 winner of the FNB Art Prize. The Nigerian mixed-medium artist explores strong African narratives with a focus on the experiences of contemporary African women.Peju Alatise’s mixed-medium installation Flying Girls was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in June 2017. (Image: Peju Alatise)CD AndersonAlatise’s various early paintings, later sculptures and current installations will be the showcase exhibit at the tenth annual FNB Joburg Art Fair, to be held in Sandton from 8-10 September 2017.The fair, one of South Africa’s leading art events, will feature more than 60 exhibitions across five categories, including traditional and modern art. Artists and cultural organisations from 11 countries, including the United States, will be part of the event.Alatise’s work was nominated for the award by Johannesburg’s Red Door Gallery. Gallery founder Bola Asiru felt that her work best communicated both the African and female experience. “Peju’s work is filled with strong societal narratives on the realities of life in Africa,” Asiru said.Born in 1975 in Lagos, Nigeria, Alatise studied architecture before being inspired by the jarring and honest visual art of fellow Nigerian artist David Dale. She later trained with Dale, as well as worked with traditional artisans around Africa, learning to incorporate materials such as beads, cloth and natural resins into her increasingly ambitious works.Alatise has exhibited around the world, including at the Smithsonian Institute of African Art in the US and the Venice Biennale in Italy, one of the world’s longest running and most respected art events. Her earlier paintings and more recent multimedia pieces are also in a number of private collections as well as permanent exhibits around the world.“It’s time for [her] message to be taken to the rest of Africa and there is no better platform for this than the FNB Joburg Art Fair,” Asiru said.“[The Biennale is the] highest level of exhibiting an artist can be honoured with,” Alatise told CNN earlier this year. “It is the Olympics of the arts.” The particular work exhibited in Venice, titled Flying Girls, is an eight-sculpture installation of winged girls in mid-flight, representing “a strong societal narrative on the realities faced by women in Africa”. The piece will on show at the Joburg Art Fair.Peju Alatise’s mixed-medium installation Flying Girls was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in June 2017. (Image: Peju Alatise)Announcing her win on its website, the Art Fair describes Alatise’s work as “installations using materials such as cloth, beads, wood, cement and resin. Addressing several social, political and gender-related issues as her primary subject matter, her works have also captured the joys and pain of womanhood as experienced in modern-life-African traditions, with all their consequences. Her subject matter has evolved with her continued experiences, moving her focus from advocating the equal rights of women to broader political and philosophical issues.”Speaking about Alatise’s winning contribution to the Joburg Art Fair, jury member Pulane Kingston from Webber Wentzel Attorneys said the judges were unanimous. “The quality of all shortlisted candidate proposals was high this year, but… Peju Alatise’s proposal… stood out. The innovative, universal social relevance and poignancy in the themes underpinning her work were some of the deciding factors in tipping the scales in her favour.“The body of her work over the years has been varied and compositionally strong and we think that it palpably reflects the intense vibrancy of the African continent. We have no doubt that the integrity of the overall body of her work will propel her career meaningfully.”As sponsor of the award and the event, Aneesa Razack, CEO of FNB Share Investing, said Alatise’s work was a fine representation of the bank’s commitment to art in Africa. “We recognise that artistic expression involves creativity and imagination, which we know to be key drivers of innovation… the social and political commentary of Alatise’s work embodies so much of what we hope to find in the recipient of the prize.”Read an indepth interview with Peju Alatise by Aljazeera here. zoom The US Department of Justice’s Environment and Natural Resources Division imposed criminal penalties to the amount of over USD 363 million throughout 2016 to shipping companies and crew for the intentional discharges of pollutants from ocean-going vessels in US waters. At the end of fiscal year 2016, the division also imposed more than 32 years of confinement for those found guilty in these cases. In December 2016, the division obtained the largest-ever criminal penalty involving deliberate vessel pollution when it concluded the prosecution of Princess Cruise Lines Ltd.The company pleaded guilty to seven felony charges and will pay a USD 40 million penalty, the DOJ said. The first case of the new year involves two Greek shipping companies, Oceanic Illsabe Limited and Oceanfleet Shipping Limited. The two companies were fined USD 2.7 million after being convicted of obstructing justice, violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS), tampering with witnesses, and conspiracy.Oceanic Illsabe Limited is the owner of the M/V Ocean Hope, a large cargo vessel that was responsible for dumping oily waste into the Pacific Ocean during 2015, while Oceanfleet Shipping Limited was the managing operator of the vessel. Each company was placed on a five-year term of probation and barred from sending ships to United States ports until its financial penalty has been satisfied. The vessel’s two top engineers were previously convicted and sentenced to serve prison sentences in connection with these crimes.
